Common questions about the game, how it's built, and how to reach us.
The game itself
What is Sudoku University?▾
Sudoku University is a Sudoku solver, trainer and generator built in Rust and Tauri, in development for a future release on Steam. It's designed to teach human solving techniques through a staged hint system rather than just handing you an answer.
Is it a fork or port of another Sudoku app?▾
No. Sudoku University is built entirely clean-room, from public technique documentation such as Sudopedia, SudokuWiki, and published technique explanations, never from any existing codebase's source, comments, or variable names. No code has been copied, ported, or transliterated from any other Sudoku project.
What platforms will it run on?▾
Windows first, via Steam. macOS and Linux support are being evaluated for a possible release after launch. See System Requirements for details.
Where can I wishlist Sudoku University?▾
The fastest way to hear when there's something to wishlist is to say hello at hello@driftwoodforge.com or keep an eye on driftwoodforge.com.
Playing & training
What's the difference between Snyder, Manual, and Auto notation?▾
Auto fills in every candidate for you automatically; Manual leaves all candidate-marking entirely to you; Snyder marks only the pairs of candidates most useful for spotting Locked Candidates and Pairs quickly. See How to Play for the full breakdown.
Why didn't a hint remove the candidate I expected?▾
Some hints depend on your own candidate notes being accurate. These are flagged with an amber "leaning" highlight. If a hint's elimination looks off, double-check your pencil-marks in that region first; the hint engine reasons from what's actually on the grid, not from a hidden ground truth.
How is puzzle difficulty decided?▾
By the hardest technique genuinely required to solve the puzzle, measured against an original SE-compatible rating engine. See Difficulty & Rating for the complete explanation.
Will more advanced techniques be added later?▾
Yes. Finned and complex fish, full AIC/Nice Loop and forcing chains, the ALS family, advanced uniqueness types 3–6, and templates are all planned for post-launch updates, once the Novice-to-Master ladder covered at launch is solid.
Getting help
Does Sudoku University reuse code from HoDoKu or any other existing solver?▾
No. Every solving technique was implemented from public documentation as a specification, not ported from source. Other engines' published outputs are occasionally used only to cross-check that a puzzle's rated difficulty looks reasonable, never to copy their logic or code.
I found a bug, or want to leave feedback.▾
Email hello@driftwoodforge.com with what happened. Screenshots or a screen recording help a lot. The game's source repository is private during development, so there isn't a public issue tracker yet.
Who's building this?▾
Sudoku University is made by Driftwood Forge, a one-person studio. Read more at driftwoodforge.com.
